Satun

In a Chinese Temple
We went to Satun for our first Visa Run. We were told by many others: "Nothing in Satun" but we wanted to see for ourselves and... believe it or not they were right. (All pics here) Satun is about an hour away by ferry from Langkawi (Malaysia) and after you arrive, just leave the terminal and Taxis are waiting outside. We paid 30 THB each to the centre of Satun and found an Hotel (Sinkiat Thani Hotel) for 680BHT, which was quite ok but no WiFi, so the next day we moved to the On´s, western run with Thai and western food, Satellite TV and free WiFi for 600THB. A nice place and worth the money, but we had to share a bathroom with another couple.(No problem though) In Satun are two main streets with little shops (not much to offer) another restaurant offering western food, but did not have any, selling home made ice cream, which they did not have and apart from that, friendly people which do not speak a word of English :)
As there was nothing to do we decided to rent a bike from the On`s for a day, (250THB) to go to the Yaroy Waterfalls, north of Satun, near the Malayan border. We found it ok and went on to climb some steps towards the top, but all    of a sudden, these finished and all there was left was a jungle trail. We only had flip-flops on but decided to still try it, but once I had the first leech on my foot we decided to turn around. I got rid off that thing by lighting a cigarette and holding it close to it`s head. It let go and I thought, smoking is not so bad after all. When travelling back to Satun we came across a Tescos and of course had to go in. We decided to have some Thai food in there (very nice) but I think best of all was the menu (take a look here)
We went back to Langkawi the next day and I still think it was worth seeing that there is not much in Satun.

One last sentence/warning about hiring a bike from the On´s: We had a puncture on the way to the waterfall, luckily we were able to have it mended not too far away. Paid 120BHT for it and set off again. When speaking to the landlord of the On´s he said we could not get this refunded or even go halves, and that even if the Motor would have gone I would have had to pay for it! (Written in his home made contract) I think this is one way to always get old bikes repaired by tourists, as the next one might pay for an exhaust which drops off or cables which burn etc. etc. So be careful and go somewhere else, or check the small print!!!!
